Driving in Mexico: What You Need to Know About Car Insurance for U.S. and Canadian Vehicles

Thinking about driving your U.S. or Canadian car into Mexico? Whether it’s your first time or your tenth, there are a few things you’ll want to know before hitting the road. From insurance requirements to permits and paperwork, we’ve got you covered—literally.

Do I Really Need Mexican Car Insurance?

Yes, 100%. If you're driving a U.S. or Canadian-plated vehicle in Mexico, you need a Mexican auto insurance policy. Your regular insurance from back home won’t cut it—Mexico doesn’t recognize foreign policies.

If you’re in an accident, especially one involving injuries or fatalities, things can get serious fast. Legal proceedings are common, and without proper coverage, you could be in for a rough ride.

With Novamar, you can easily purchase your policy online from your phone, tablet, or computer — quick, simple, and stress-free. Click here to quote your Mexico auto insurance.

Can I Use My U.S. or Canadian Driver’s License in Mexico?

Absolutely. Your valid U.S. (or Canadian) driver’s license is good to go in Mexico. Just make sure to always keep it on you—you’ll need it if you get pulled over.

What Documents Do I Need to Drive into Mexico?

Here’s your checklist:

  1. Passport or Passport Card – Required for entry and return.
  2. Driver’s License – Must be valid for the duration of your trip.
  3. Vehicle Title or Registration – Needed to prove ownership.
  4. Credit Agreement – If your vehicle is financed.
  5. Temporary Vehicle Import Permit (TIP) – Required if you’re driving beyond the border zone.

The Temporary Vehicle Import Permit (TIP)

The Temporary Vehicle Import Permit (TIP) is a must if you’re taking your foreign-plated car beyond the border region or Baja. You can get it online through Banjercito (Spanish only), at the border, or at a Mexican consulate.

The TIP is valid for six months and allows multiple entries. If your car is stolen or totaled, your insurance company will ask for it—so don’t lose it!

What Kind of Coverage Can I Get?

We offer two main types of auto insurance:

  1. Full Coverage – Includes liability, collision, theft, medical expenses, legal aid, roadside assistance, and more. Best for newer vehicles, long trips, or anyone who wants peace of mind.
  2. Liability Only – Covers third-party damage and legal support. Great for short trips or older vehicles.

We also insure RVs, ATVs, UTVs, campers, watercraft, and even homes in Mexico. Need travel insurance? We’ve got that too. Click here to quote your travel insurance.

How Much Car Insurance Should I Get?

In Mexico, there are no minimum limits for this coverage as in other countries, but it must be considered that each state has a minimum compensation limit in case of accidental death. The best course of action for drivers is to carry high liability limits.

What Happens If I Get in an Accident?

You must report all claims before leaving México and within 5 days of the accident.

  1. Remain Calm.
  2. Do not leave the scene.
  3. Call one of the claims numbers. You will be asked to provide:
  4. Policy number.
  5. Name of the insured and the driver.
  6. Vehicle identification: make, model, year, type, color, and license plate.
  7. Place and address where the accident occurred.
  8. If the vehicle is moved from the scene of the accident, you must inform the insurance company of the new location.
  9. When the adjuster arrives, you will be asked for your insurance policy and a valid driver’s license.
  10. You will be asked to fill out the accident report. Please do so since failure to do that may result in rejection of the claim.

Should I Carry a Printed Copy of My Policy?

Yes. While a digital copy on your phone works, having a printed version is smart. If you’re in an accident or stopped by police or military, it’s easier to hand over a paper copy than your phone.

Where Does My Coverage Work?

We offer three territory options:

  1. Limited Territory – Covers Sonora and Baja California. Perfect for beach getaways like Puerto Peñasco or San Carlos.
  2. Border Only – Covers the six Mexican states that border the U.S. Great for quick trips across Arizona, New Mexico, or Texas.
  3. Full Mexico – Nationwide coverage. Ideal for road trips to colonial towns, mountain villages, or the Caribbean coast.

Why Bother with Insurance?

  1. It’s the law – No insurance? You risk fines, impoundment, or worse.
  2. It protects you – From medical bills to legal fees, the right policy has your back.
  3. It’s flexible – Whether you’re crossing for a weekend or a winter, we’ve got a plan that fits.
