Health Insurance in Mexico

You want your stay in Mexico to be a pleasant and predictable experience.  But what if you should fall ill or suffer an accident?  You want to be treated in the best hospitals with the most knowledgeable healthcare providers, but the cost of treatment in a private hospital can cost upwards of millions of pesos.  A Mexican health insurance policy will provide you with financial protection as well as peace of mind. 

Important factors to consider are:

Direct Payment Agreements with Hospitals and Clinics

Your health insurance policy should have direct payment agreements with hospitals and clinics.

The standard procedure during check in at a hospital in Mexico is for the hospital to obtain your credit card for all the charges that are incurred during your stay.  However, if your health insurance policy has a direct payment agreement with your hospital or clinic, then the charges can be paid directly by the insurance carrier.  Your insurance agent should be able to let you know which hospitals and clinics in your area are covered under your policy and whether they have these direct payment agreements.  It should be noted that for hospital and clinic stays less than 24 hours, the direct payment agreement does not apply; in that case, you will be required to pay the bill at the time of services and then get reimbursed by the insurance carrier.

 

Included Medication and Treatment

Your policy should cover all the medications, medical devices and treatments necessary for a full and complete recovery from the incident or illness.  If you pay for expenses, check with your agent to find out who the invoices and receipts should be made out to.  Some insurance companies ask for the invoices and receipts to be in the insurance company’s name, some ask for them to be made out to the name of the insured on the policy, and others want them made out to a specific company.  Your agent should be able to help you avoid any unnecessary delays and mistakes by letting you know up front how to handle your specific situation.

 

 Waiting Periods on New Policies 

All health insurance policies in Mexico have a waiting period for some illnesses and some pre-existing conditions. The most common waiting periods are three to twelve months but can be as long as twenty-four months. You can expect to pay more for a policy with a shorter waiting period.  You should get this information from your agent before you buy any new policy.

 

Switching Insurance Companies 

If you want to change from your current insurance company, you should confirm that the new insurance company will accept you and cover all your pre-existing conditions (if you have any), otherwise you might not have coverage if you make the change.  If you are not happy with the current service you are receiving, it is very likely that your agent is not doing their job well.  If that is the case, you can keep your current policy but change agents.  This way, you do not lose coverage from the insurance company that has already been paying the for your medical expenses.

 

Covid

 Today, almost all insurance companies cover the medical expenses incurred for the treatment of a covid infection.  You should check with your agent to find out if your policy has any coverage sublimit or waiting period; most do not, but there are some that require a thirty-day waiting period before providing any corona virus coverage.

 

Deductibles and Co-Payments

All health insurance policies have a deductible - some deductibles will apply to the calendar year and others will apply to a specific illness or accident.  Some health insurance policies also have a co-pay which means that in addition to paying the deductible, you will also be responsible for paying a percentage of the expenses (usually 10%).  The co-pay will have a cap which is typically $40,000.00 pesos.  Check with your agent to find out what your co-pay cap is and if you can eliminate your deductible by paying an additional premium.

 Claims

 When you have an accident or illness, you should always ask your medical professional for a medical report and invoices for all the expenses incurred and submit them to your insurance company (through your agent) as an accident or illness notification.  Even if the initial expenses do not exceed your deductible, if later expenses do exceed your deductible, the insurance company will already have your documents and the subsequent expenses can be included in your claim.

 

Registered Insurance Company

You should confirm that any insurance company you intend to hold a policy with is registered with the Mexican Insurance Department (CNSF) or your personal country of origin jurisdiction such as the United States or Canada.

 

Licensed Insurance Agent and Brokerage

 You might feel that you can assume your agent and the insurance companies they represent hold valid licenses in Mexico, the country in which you are purchasing and using the policy.  Unfortunately, there are many individuals that call themselves agents or brokers that are not licensed and registered with the Mexican Department of Insurance (CNSF, which stands for Comision Nacional de Seguros y Fianzas). Seguro de Gastos Médicos en México

Tener una póliza de seguros de gastos médicos es una tranquilidad mental y financiera. Una enfermedad o un accidente pueden costar millones de pesos en hospitales privados, y cuando esto sucede uno quiere ser atendido en el mejor hospital. Saber que estos gastos están bajo control nos permiten tener una estancia más placentera en México, ya sea que viva uno aquí de forma permanente o por varios meses al año.

Estos son los principales puntos que debemos de tener en cuenta con nuestra póliza de seguros de gastos médico en México.

Hospitales y Clínicas con pago directo

Mi póliza de seguros de gastos médicos debe de tener pago directo con los mejores hospitales y clínicas de la ciudad y del país. Esto se puede checar con mi agente de seguros para que me confirme el nivel hospitalario al que tengo acceso y los hospitales y clínicas en convenio. También es importante mencionar que para que funcione el pago directo debo permanecer por lo menos 24 hrs en el hospital o clínica, de los contrario yo tengo que pagar el recibo y la aseguradora de lo reembolsará.

 

Medicinas y tratamientos incluidos

Mi póliza debe de incluir todas las medicinas, aparatos y tratamientos que necesite para mi recuperación de las enfermedades y accidentes cubiertos en mi póliza. Debo de checar con mi agente de seguros a nombre de quién debe salir el recibo o factura si las compro o pago yo: algunas aseguradoras las piden a su nombre, otras a un nombre de una de sus empresas en específico y otras a el nombre del asegurado en la póliza.

 

Tiempo de espera en pólizas nuevas

Todas las pólizas de gastos médicos tienen un periodo de espera para algunas enfermedades, algunos llegan a ser de hasta 24 meses. La mayoría tiene de 3 a 12 meses. Las pólizas más caras solo tienen 3 meses para cualquier enfermedad. Esto lo debo de checar con mi agente antes de comprar mi póliza nueva.

 

Cambiando de una compañía de seguros a la otra.

Si deseo salirme de mi aseguradora actual debo de confirmar que la nueva compañía de seguros me va a aceptar y reconocer todas mis preexistencias (si las hay), de lo contrario es mejor no cambiarse. Si no estoy a gusto con el servicio, es muy probable que mi agente no esté haciendo su trabajo. Es hora de cambiar de agente y seguir con la misma aseguradora que me ha pagado gastos médicos en el pasado.

COVID

Hoy en día casi todas las compañías de seguros cubren los gastos médicos que genera el tratamiento de esta infección. Debo checar con mi agente si mi póliza tiene algún sublímite y un tiempo de espera; la mayoría no lo tienen y solo con unas pocas debo esperar 30 días para que me pueda cubrir por salir infectado del coronavirus.

Deducible y copago

Todas las pólizas de seguros de gastos médicos tienen un deducible y pocas un copago o coaseguro, el cual normalmente está topado a una cantidad, es decir, además de pagar el deducible voy a tener que pagar un porcentaje de los gastos (normalmente es del 10%) hasta una cantidad que puede ser 40,000 pesos normalmente. Debo checar con mi agente mi deducible, si este se puede eliminar con una extra prima y cuál es mi tope de coaseguro.

Reclamaciones

Cuando tenga un accidente o enfermedad debo de pedir el reporte médico y el comprobante de los gastos si es que no rebasaron el deducible y entregárselos a la aseguradora con el formato de notificación de accidente o enfermedad. Si los gastos subsecuentes llegan a rebasar el deducible, la aseguradora ya tendrá todos los documentos desde un inicio y se podrá hacer cargos de los gastos subsecuentes.

Aseguradora registrada

Por último, debo confirmar que la compañía de Seguros que emite mi póliza esté registrada ante el departamento de seguros de México (CNSF) o de los Estados Unidos, de Canadá o de mi país de origen.

Agente de seguros con licencia en México

Es posible que piense que el agente y las compañías de seguros que me representan tengan licencias válidas en México, o en el país en el que está comprando o en el que estoy usando la póliza.  Desafortunadamente, hay muchas personas que se llaman a sí mismas agentes o corredores que no tienen licencia y no están registrados en el Departamento de Seguros de México (CNSF, que significa Comisión Nacional de Seguros y Fianzas).
