Mexico Rainy Season 2026: Home, Car & Yacht Preparation
In just a few days, hurricane season will begin in Mexico. Along the Pacific coast, it officially starts on May 15, while the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean regions follow on June 1. For both coasts, the season runs through November 30.
According to a recent report from the NOAA, El Niño conditions are expected to strengthen toward the end of summer, potentially leading to increased cyclonic activity during Mexico’s 2026 rainy season, including the risk of rapid intensification events similar to Hurricane Otis.
It is very important to be prepared to prevent damage, in addition to review your insurance policy. As your Insurance Broker, Novamar MX makes the following recommendations.
How to prepare your home for the rainy season in Mexico
- Maintain waterproofing on roofs and exterior walls. It’s essential to keep the structure free of cracks where rainwater could seep in.
- Check the water pipes and hoses in the bathrooms and kitchen.
- Check the seal of windows and glass doors.
- Have a plan to store goods inside a secure building so that they do not fly away in the wind.
- Check that drainage channels and rain gutters are clean, as they are often blocked by leaves and dirt.
- In the gardens, check that water will drain properly.
- If there is a low room at floor level, test the sump pumps to make sure they are working properly.
- Have an emergency plan in place in case you must evacuate due to a hurricane or flood.
- If you leave your home or condo vacant during the rainy/hurricane season, consider shutting off water and electricity before returning to the U.S. or Canada.
Check the coverages in your insurance policy and know the amounts of deductibles and coinsurance, because that is the amount you are responsible for paying before the insurer begins to pay for damages. Have the insurance company’s phone number along with the policy number handy.
