Pre-existing Conditions
If you have a pre-existing condition that the Insurance carrier has classified as common, for example Diabetes II, Hypertension, etc. You can get coverage, but with an exclusion on this condition. There are a few exceptions. This is determined case by case by the underwriting team once we submit your application.
If you have an autoimmune/degenerative condition like HIV or Multiple Sclerosis(MS), the insurance carriers will not be able to offer any coverage. You then have the option to obtain a Travel Plan or Medical evacuation but not a health insurance plan.
It is important for you to consider health insurance plans are designed to cover major medical expenses for long-term. These plans are renewed on an annual basis with them, most likely requiring an initial medical evaluation and approval to secure life term coverage. If you spend at least 6 months in Mexico each year we recommend your sign up for a health insurance plan to secure your long-term coverage. It is important to purchase a health insurance policy BEFORE you experience a major medical event.
Immigration status & Age
Immigration Status: All Mexican health plans require your Temporary/Permanent Resident Card. Residency status will not affect the premiums on your policy.
Is there an ideal age to purchase a policy? The ideal time to secure coverage is before turning 59, although we do have plans available for applicants up to 100 years of age.
MAPFRE requires lab work starting at age 59. Other insurers typically begin requiring lab work at age 65. Being prepared and in good health when you apply can help lead to better results.
Difference between Health and Travel
It is important to understand the difference between a health insurance policy and a travel insurance policy when choosing your coverage, as the two are often confused due to both providing medical benefits. While both policies cover medical care, a health insurance plan is designed to provide long-term, comprehensive medical coverage for individuals who are residing in Mexico. In contrast, a travel insurance policy is intended to cover emergency medical treatment during a temporary stay in Mexico for a defined period; it can be a minimum 6-day policy or up to 1 year.
Travel insurance policies do not require a medical application; however, they exclude any conditions related to prior medical history. This exclusion applies each time the policy is purchased, which means these plans are not suitable for long-term or ongoing medical care, unlike a health insurance policy.
