Pre-existing Conditions

If you have a pre- existing condition that the Insurance carrier has classified as common, for example Diabetes I, Hypertension, etc. You will most likely get coverage, but with an exclusion on this condition. There are a few exceptions. This is determined case by case by the underwriting team once we submit your application.

If you have a degenerative condition like HIV, or Multiple sclerosis, the insurance carriers will not be able to offer any coverage. You then have the option to obtain a Travel Plan or Medical evacuation but not a health insurance plan.

It is important for you to consider that the health insurance plan is designed to cover your health and any major medical expenses for long term. These plans are renewed on an annual basis with an initial medical evaluation and approval to secure life term coverage. If you spend at least 6 months in Mexico each year we recommend that your sign up for a health insurance plan to secure your long term coverage.

Difference between Health and Travel

It is crucial to understand the difference between a Health and Travel policy, at the time you are making a decision on your coverage. It is common to confuse a travel policy with health insurance policy as they both provide medical coverage.

While both policies are designed to cover your medical care, the health insurance plan is designed to offer long term, full medical coverage for people settled in Mexico. A travel insurance policy offers coverage for emergency treatment while visiting Mexico for a short and set period. It can be a 7 day policy or a 6 month policy, etc. These plans do not require a health application but will exclude any condition related to medical history. This restriction applies each time the policy is purchased so it will not secure long term care as a health insurance plan does.

Travel
  • Short term coverage
  • No medical questionnaire or medical exams needed
  • Each year you purchase the plan, it is subject to medical history exclusions
  • Low costs
  • Does not cover cancers or any other long term conditions
  • Covers medical emergencies and accidents
Health
  • Long term coverage
  • Medical questionnaire needed and sometimes medical exams
  • Defined approval conditions for life
  • Higher costs
  • Covers any long term condition
  • Covers any medical emergencies
Immigration status & Age

Immigration Status: Most national health plans require your Temporal/Permanent Resident Card while other carriers do not request it to issue your policy. Ex. BMI, Red Bridge, among others. Residency status will not affect the premiums on your policy.

What is the best age to purchase a policy? With the health plans the best age is before 59 years old. We have options for you up to age 75 years.

If you are applying for Mapfre’s policy they will require some labwork exams starting at age 59. For the rest of the insurers they require labwork for ages 65+. When applying, be prepared and in best shape possible for the best results possible!
